Tips on Creating a Great PowerPoint Presentation

The ability to communicate in a professional manner is a lifetime skill. Enclosed are guidelines not absolutes in creating a great presentation

Choose a topic you are interested in – show enthusiasm.

Be confident

Make eye contact with several members of the audience

Refrain from using empty words and fillers, such as uh, like, you know, uhm….

Slides should list key points. DO not fill a slide up with text

Visual effects should enhance your presentation not distract from it

Choose 1 or 2 fonts and stick with them

Text should be easy to read – watch font, size and contrast against background

Generally – no more than 6 words a line and no more than 6 lines a slide

Words in all capital letters are hard to read

Use a consistent style

Align on the left hand side

Balance text and graphics

Use the spell checker

Practice your presentation – Know how to manipulate the presentation, next slide, previous slide, running the slide show

Include an introduction, body and conclusion.  The body should represent 70% of your presentation

Ask the audience if they have any questions. DO NOT make up answers. You are expected to have an adequate understanding of your topic but you are not expected to be an expert

Watch the sound files that come with PowerPoint– use conservatively

If you obtain external sounds make sure they are .wav files, other sound formats in PowerPoint do not play from the room.

If you use external sounds and or video make sure they are included in your zip disk as well as incorporated in your PowerPoint presentation. In some cases these “objects” may need to be reinserted to play correctly.

If an element does not work correctly – move on

Cite your references correctly

Audience – the golden rule is “respect  Treat others as you would like to be treated. This means no talking, no cell phones, no reading.
